How Does A Search Engine Work ?

There are 3 main Search Engines. Google, Yahoo and Bing. As over 66% of traffic comes from Google that is where we concentrate our efforts.

When you sit down at your computer and do a Google search, you’re almost instantly presented with a list of results from all over the web. How does Google find web pages matching your query, and determine the order of search results?

In the simplest terms, you could think of searching the web as looking in a very large book with an impressive index telling you exactly where everything is located.

When you perform a Google search, the programs check their index to determine the most relevant search results to be returned to you.

So the Search Engine is really just an enormous index of everything out there on the Internet. Google is fanatical about returning the most accurate results for people that search. That way people continue to return to Google.

For your site it is vital that when someone types in the search phrase (or keywords(s) as they are commonly referred to) for which you are trying to rank for, that you appear on the first page of the ‘search results’. 90% of traffic comes from the first page.

An Example

You are Accountants in Manchester. We determine that people enter the search term ‘Accountant Manchester’.

So you want to ‘rank’ for that keyword. We use several techniques to get you the Page 1 ranking. This includes ‘on page’ and ‘off page’ optimization. These two combined represent what is called Search Engine Optimization or SEO as it is commonly known.

‘On page’ is exactly that, making sure that when Google looks at your site it knows that you are related to ‘Accountant Manchester’.

‘Off Page’ is more complicated and involves primarily building links from other sites to yours. Google sees these links as votes for your site.

So effectively we convince Google that if someone looks for ‘Accountant Manchester’ that you are a prime candidate

We then build a monthly marketing plan for your site which builds its strength and presence on the Net.

Why Is No One Visiting My Site ?

We estimate that over 99% of web sites are created only with ‘design’ in mind. Very little or no thought is given regarding optimizing them for the ‘search engines’.

Very simply you must be optimized for the keywords that people are using to search. You may be on Page 1 of Google for several keywords BUT if no one is searching using those terms then no one will visit you.

Example

JK Accountants in Manchester are not getting any visitors. This is because they are ranked highly only for terms such as ‘JK Accountants’. No one is searching using that phrase !.

The solution is firstly to identify the right keywords ie search terms that people are entering on a regular basis and then get your site optimized for these terms.

The online environment is becoming increasingly competitive, and those Companies that perform Search engine optimization and site promotion will have a decided advantage with more visitors and clients.
